And I give it a C. Maybe a C-.
The holiday concert by "Men Alive Chorus" (aka: gay men's chorus of Orange County) was... uhhhmm... yeeeah {said ala Office Space}.
They sang okay - not great but also not bad. Definitely not anything I'd rave about. For me, their production left a LOT to be desired. I felt like I was watching an episode of The Little Rascals, when they get that "let's put on a show" wild hair and do a production in the barn. Parts were good(-ish). Parts probably seemed good on paper, or in rehearsal, but were painful with a live audience. Basically, I was expecting something more polished & professional... and couldn't seem to snap out of that expectation in order to just go with the flow of it being amateurish. As a result, I spent a ridiculous amount of time trying to figure out if the person in the middle of the chorus was a woman (I'm pretty sure it was - they're non-discriminatory that way - but I really couldn't tell).
It was also another instance of it being TOO FUCKING COLD IN HERE for me to enjoy ANYTHING.
THANK GAWD I got my tix through GoldStar, for less than 1/2 price. I thought it was a bit of a ripoff at $20; I'd have been PISSED if I paid full price ($45). Lesson learned.
The South Coast Chorale (aka: Gay & Lesbian Chorus of Long Beach) is doing a holiday show in 2 weeks. Maybe I'll give them a try. I'm likely to know some of the singers (due to brunch bunch) and, even if not, now know to have realistic expectations. But I know at least 1 thing, and maybe 2, is already on my calendar for that night - so I need to find out what's already booked - and how that compares to the $35 ticket charge for the SCC.
Highlight of the night: It was still raining (18 hours of rain - I can't believe it!!) and the UCI campus had lots of good puddles on the path back to the parking structure. By the time I got to the elevator, thanks to my zealous puddle stomping efforts, I was soaked from socks to knees. TOTALLY worth it!!
2nd Highlight of the night: Got a email that Justin is looking for some extra volunteers, without dogs, to march in the parade with him. 2 people to carry his Grand Marshall banner and about 6 more to hand out candy & HauteDogs info cards (the parade's theme is "Dog Days of Christmas"). I might be too late but, if not, I might be in a holiday parade (my favorite holiday parade - it's tiny but fun) Saturday night!!
She Wants Revenge, 11/21/06 (House of Blues - San Diego)
Opening bands were Monster (didn't hear them) and Pretty Girls Make Graves (thought Pants Party would like them). I HATE that their lighting caused their photo to come out better than anything I took of SWR.
SWR was great - they always are. Short set again - just over an hour (that includes the encore). But they only have 1 album (13 songs) and 2 promo tracks, so they still ended up performing the majority of their music.
I was annoyed with the girls behind me during Adam's instrumental piece, "Disconnected" because the music is really touching (to me, the song sounds like remembering a great love from the past) but the girls spent the duration of this beautiful song screaming, "TAKE IT OFF!!" Soooo not the right moment.
LOVED when the band sang their 2 promo tracks, "Black Liner Run" and "Spend the Night", which are only available on the "These Things" EP. Because nearly no one has that EP, 99% of the audience stood around, not sure what they were hearing. Kim and I (and a handful of others) rocked out and got to play, "We're bigger fans that you are!! (neener-neener-nee-ner!!)"
I got a kick out of seeing that during "I Don't Want To Fall In Love", at the counting part, Justin finger-counts (1, 2, 3... 4-5-6-7!) in sign language... because I finger count in sign too.
Kim and I were only 4 people from the stage, and 4 people from center, for the entire show. Unfortunately, there was a super tall guy in front of us - and the band spent the vast majority of the show in the center, or left of us.
A nice bonus event for me: I happened to witness the exact moment Kim went from being obsessed with Justin, the lead singer, to noticing Adam, the keyboardest - and becoming completely obsessed with him instead She's apparently a sucker for dimples... and Adam surely has that base covered. The change of obsessions worked out well as I had promised Kim she'd get a sweaty hug from Justin... but he never came out after the show. Adam, on the other hand, signed autographs... which is what I'm holding in my photo (signed ticket)... and posed for pictures... which is Kim's photo.
I only recorded a couple minutes of video footage (still have to edit it & save in a playable format) because the security guard (a bastard!) wouldn't let me record. I'm semi-debating about seeing them, again, in Anaheim tonight (Wed). It's MUCH closer to my home/work (San Diego was an 85 mile drive - we made it in 1 hr), but it's also a bigger venue and snottier crowd (that's where I saw DEVO). I'll most likely skip it because it would be hard to top tonight.
Here are the rest of the best of the pics (the rest are in my photo gallery - in case you're interested):
[upd: I just realized this post is a nearly ideal summation of my entire personality and diversity of interests.]
Saw this sex tips book at a rather schamncy store and had to own it... if for no other reason than to let people see it in my bookcase. The cashier was an acquiantance from the past who said, "Let me guess - you bought it so you could rewrite it." I think he was serious.
I also picked up this edition of "If". Look for questions/answers soon.
I got super-premimum catnip toys for the kitties - they're in heaven.
And these salt/pepper shakers for Justin (and Rosie and Riley). Here's a pic of Rose & Riley for comparison (Rosie, 9.5 yrs old, on the left; Riley - newest family member, 11 mos old, on the right). Rosie's famous - she's even been on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno!!
Speaking of which, Justin is going to be in 'the mob' on "1 vs 100" - as a spelling specialist (he runs an annual Spelling Bee). He's going to Hollywood//Burbank on Tues for filming. They told him to expect to be there for 12 to 18 hrs. Ugh!
Finally, I got this "Dream B Sleep Sheep" for a coworker who's expecting a baby in December. It plays four "soothing sounds" - heartbeat (as heard in the womb - kinda freaky outside the womb), rain, ocean, and whale (annoying). It's supposed to help babies sleep and to be calm. I hope it works.
