Short and sweet: Thanks to a bizarre lack of traffic, I arrived at the courthouse super early. That worked to my advantage as it took about 5 laps of downtown LA to find the designated parking location (each incorrect parking lot kept directing me further and further from the courthouse. I finally realized that made no sense, followed my instincts, and found where I was supposed to be).
Once inside the building, we spent about 2 hour sitting around (in the hallways because they have no jury service room). Then 70 people were called for a jury pool. And the rest of us were excused - not for the day but for the next 12 months. Grand Jury has, despite what I read, apparently converted to the "1 day or 1 trial" system. So I'm DONE. W00t!!
Jury duty starts tomorrow. I'm REALLY dreading the early wakeup and sure-to-be horrid commute. Plus I think I shredded the original summons. I was on a MAJOR shredding spree over the weekend and they'd sent additional paperwork which I thought replaced the first paperwork. I can't find the original paperwork (thus the assumption I shredded it) but a little while ago I saw the note that I'm supposed to bring both. Doh! And I think the original paperwork is the one that gets us free parking. Double Doh!!
I just bought a ticket to Love LA, some kind of love/erotica show coming up on Jan 27. I really don't know much about it. Won't be surprised if it bombs - there hasn't been much promotion (at least not anywhere that I've seen). But the organizers are the same girls who taught the burlesque class at EroticaLA (I really liked them), it has the backing of The PleasureChest, it's not inconvenient, and ticket price was reasonable - so what the hell. Only problem is that it's running from 11a to 7p, with free seminars from 12-8p in 2 different rooms - and I want to attend every single seminar (is there really anything for me to learn at the "JoyStick Secrets - How To Please Your Man" class? I really doubt it [she said with a wicked grin] - but I'll go anyway!).
I swear I'm going to post my 2007 resolution results - and come up with some resolutions for '08. But I'm in no hurry.
For now, I think I'll do one more search for the MIA paperwork, pack another book to read (I'm only bringing erotica novels), give my kitties some lovin (Boo's been sneezing - I might need to take her to the vet this weekend), and take something to knock me out ASAP. I swear, I don't know how you morning people manage.
Good Jan 2 juju goes out to Charlie 5-0 (job interview?) and BrownAmazon (MRI that provides accurate diagnosis and, more importantly, rapid path to recovery). And to my friend Jenn Blinn (the one in Sweden) cause it's her Burfday.
I normally go to bed at 3 am and get up at 10a. I will, very literally, have to be up by 5:30am to get to DOWNTOWN LOS ANGELES (fuck!!) in time to park.
Assuming I manage to stay awake during jury selection, how many people do you think I'm liable to find innocent on 2.5 hrs of sleep - especially when I know I'll be facing a 2hr commute home (30 miles)??
have NO idea how long I have to serve (a day? [I think that's only Orange County Superior Court] a week? a month? the rest of my fucking life [I'm sure it will feel like it!]).
Assuming it's a week or more, this encompasses the date of my SF trip and NON-REFUNDABLE airline tix and 2 NON-REFUNDABLE tix to Cirque.
Yes, yes... civic duty... proud to be an American... I'd want my peers to show up if I was being accused of something... blahblahblah.
It still doesn't change the fact that my first 100 responses to opening this are: FUCK!!
