Opaque - Dining in the Dark
I've wanted to do this since I first heard about it happening in Europe, several years ago. Now in West Hollywood (at the Hyatt) every Sat night. $99 per person.
Definitely need to try this with someone. Anyone else up for the experience? (Check out the video!!)
Imagine that you can not see for an hour or two, that you are abandoning vision in exchange for a new, multi-sensual dining experience. Opaque is enhancing our senses of taste, smell, touch, and hearing by abandoning one that we often take for granted – this is “Dining in the Dark”.
Opaque - Dining in the Dark – will seat you in a literally pitch-black dining room where you will be guided and served by blind or visually impaired individuals that have been specially trained to serve meals in the dark, casually and comfortably offering guidance and reassurance for sighted guests.
Upon arriving at the Dining in the Dark venue, you will be welcomed in a lighted lounge area where you will pick from a specially prepared menu (designed by a sighted local ‘star’ chef), and we check your coat or bag as you don't need anything but your senses. Once you have ordered, you will be personally guided into the darkened dining room. Special security measures are taken to make your experience both safe and enjoyable.
Dining in the Dark takes place every weekend on a recurring basis at the renowned Hyatt Hotel on Sunset Strip in . Other events are coming soon in West Hollywood. Other events are coming soon in San Francisco, San Diego and a location near you!

What if there's a fly in your soup? Or a hair on your babka? or..? or? I don't know, I like the idea in theory but I have to see what I am eating. Not to mention the fact that I'd have to wear a wetsuit cuz I'd have it all down the front of me & they'd have to hose me off before I left. How about the bathrooms? are they lit? I have too many questions.
hehe
I don't think I am California enough for this. :-P
The Hyatt WeHo is extremely reputable. Besides, I'm sure I've eatten bug in my food before (in fact, I just recalled 2 instances of it) and all has been fine. What's a little fly here or there?
Since I spill all over myself on the best of days - I'm sure I'll need a similar hosing-down. Maybe they offer wet t-shirt contests after?!?
Yeah, you know, dining in the dark might not be such a bad idea for me after all. I go thru periods where I feel really self conscious eating in front of people (not for a long while though.) and maybe if it was dark it might be quieter & people would be less likely to be on their goddamn cell phone. They probably ban them anyway. (hopefully)
It's cool that the servers are blind or impaired visually.
