Common Foods & Products that can poison pets

Thanks for sharing this. There were some here I didn't know (esp. the fabric softener sheets one - I never would have thought of that. I wonder, they're probably harmful to humans too, but since we're so much bigger we just don't see the effects).
That caught me by surprise too. I leave those things laying around all the time. Or, I did.

Another rarely known one is that Pothos (the house plant) are poisonous to cats (if eaten).
Wow, thats one scary list! Thanks for sharing, most of these things sound so benign!
Whoa! I didn't know about avocado... We let Rudy have his way with some on Tuesdays frequently. We'll definitely have to stop that. I didn't know about grapes either until one night when I was giving him some of mine and decided to look it up. I was HORRIFIED.

I didn't know about a lot of these either. Lucky for both of us I don't eat fruit, don't use mothballs or fabric softener sheets anymore, keep my pennies in my purse (not that he'd eat them anyway) and I already knew about onions and a few of the others that I do eat. I think garlic is another one that you have to watch out for. I should look for the list I have and compare.
I've seen way more extensive lists too. This was from NBC or ABC and is one of the few that bothers to mention how much of something is poisonous and cumulative effects. Though I recall having heard, several times now, that the quantity for chocolate is especially high. I had a dog that ate an entire big bag of Hershey's Kisses and, other than sparkling poop for a week, was no worse for the wear. But I didn't realize grapes were so serious.
That's the first I've heard about avocados too. I wonder how much it takes to actually cause damage.

I learned about Pothos the hard way - had a cat that, out of the blue, started wailing. When I went to check on him, he couldn't stay upright (kept falling over) and was clearly disoriented. Rushed him to a vet (unfortunately, a crap one) who said he was poisoned and because we didn't know the cause all we could do was to wait it out (so he added sedatives to the situation! Oh, how I would love to go back and kill that man). anyhoo... the cat had been indoors. I later learned about pothos and have assumed he ate one of the leaves.
Yeah, I think I heard that a dog the size of a Jack Russell terrier would have to eat about a pound of M&Ms to really get ill or die, so I don't worry about Elvis getting small amounts. Plus they will usually throw up first. I don't think I knew about grapes either, because my old boss use to give her dog (a JRT) grapes, but I don't know if he'd eat it eventually or just play with it. I did know about macadamias but didn't know or remember about walnuts. I give Elvis almonds sometimes, maybe I should quit that to be safe.
